Tight Ship Safety & Navigation Disclaimer
This disclaimer applies to the Tight Ship app and website (the "Service") provided by The Life Warriors, LLC, a Colorado limited liability company doing business as Sailing Life Warriors ("we", "us"). It forms part of our Terms of Use (https://mytightship.com/terms). Please read it before you rely on anything in the app.
The bottom line
Tight Ship is a notebook and planning tool for your boat. It is not a navigation aid, not a safety system, and not an emergency service. You, the skipper, are solely responsible for your vessel and everyone aboard.
1. Not a navigation aid
Tight Ship is not designed, tested or certified for navigation. Do not use it to navigate, to avoid hazards, or to decide where it is safe to go.
- Any position, track, underway or arrival information may be inaccurate, delayed or missing. GPS can be wrong or lost, and phones can run out of battery, overheat, get wet or fail.
- Always navigate with official, up-to-date charts (paper or approved electronic), proper navigation equipment, a proper lookout, and current Notices to Mariners, local notices, weather and tidal information.
- Arrival reminders are a convenience only. They are not a float plan, and nobody is watching them. Leave a float plan with a responsible person ashore.
2. Not a substitute for seamanship or professional help
Tight Ship does not replace:
- good seamanship, training, experience and judgement;
- the manufacturer's manual and instructions for your equipment;
- a qualified marine technician, surveyor, rigger, electrician or gas fitter; or
- the laws, regulations and requirements of your flag state, the waters you are in, and your insurer.
If anything in the app conflicts with the manufacturer's manual, official guidance or a qualified professional, follow them, not the app.
3. Reminders, checklists and help content may be wrong
We work hard to make Tight Ship useful, but you should assume that anything in the app could be wrong. In particular:
- Maintenance schedules and service intervals are only as good as the information entered. They may not match your equipment, its age, how it is used, or the manufacturer's current recommendations.
- Safety-gear expiry dates (for flares, life rafts, life jackets, fire extinguishers, EPIRBs, first-aid kits and so on) depend on what you enter. Check the gear itself, and follow the servicing requirements of the manufacturer and your authorities.
- Reminders and notifications may not arrive, for example if notifications are off, the app is closed, the phone is off or flat, or there is a software problem.
- Checklists, including the Skipper checklist, are general starting points. They are not complete for your vessel, crew, conditions or passage. Adapt them and use your own judgement.
- Provisions and passage-shortfall figures are estimates. Always carry enough water, food, fuel, medical supplies and spares, with a safety margin.
- Help and troubleshooting guides and owner's manual links may be general, incomplete or out of date, and may not apply to your model or installation.
- Energy data (for example from Victron VRM / Cerbo GX) may be delayed, incomplete or wrong. Check your instruments.
- Budget and cost figures are only as accurate as what you enter.
4. AI answers are for information only
Tight Ship's AI features, including on-device help on supported iPhones, the built-in AI and voice assistant on Admiral, photo identification, and any AI you connect yourself, can give answers that are wrong, incomplete, out of date or invented, even when they sound confident. No person checks them.
- Treat AI answers as information to check, not instructions to follow.
- For gas or propane (LPG), electrical systems or lithium batteries, rigging, steering, fuel systems, or medical matters, you must verify any AI answer with the equipment manufacturer or a qualified professional before acting on it. Take the same care with engines, through-hulls, bilge pumps, firefighting equipment, weather and navigation.
- Voice entry and photo identification can mishear or misidentify things. Check what was recorded.
5. The skipper is solely responsible
The skipper is solely responsible for the vessel, its seaworthiness, maintenance and equipment, for the decision to go to sea or stay in port, for passage planning, and for the safety of everyone aboard. That responsibility cannot be handed to an app, a checklist or an AI.
6. Not for emergencies
Tight Ship is not an emergency service and cannot call for help. In an emergency:
- call on VHF Channel 16, or send a DSC distress alert;
- activate your EPIRB or PLB; and
- contact the coast guard, your local maritime rescue coordination centre, or emergency services by phone or satellite phone.
Do not lose time looking for answers in the app when you or your crew are in danger.
7. Our liability
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for any loss, damage, injury or death arising from reliance on the Service, including reminders, checklists, help content, third-party data or AI answers. Our Terms of Use explain this in full, including rights you have under consumer law that we cannot exclude.
